Dhoom 2 Action Film: Bollywood can do Hollywood
DHOOM 2 is a glowing hit at the box office. The previous version of Dhoom was a faithful copy of Car. And, it clicked not because of Abhisheik or Uday, but John Abraham’s personality. This time, it’s Hrithik and he deserves all the clapping. Fast-paced, action-packed Dhoom 2 has set new Bollywood standards in the filming of action thrillers. Designed to keep the audience on the edge, the movie races to finish with Hritik doing impossible stunts.
Dhoom 2 is a cat-and-mouse chase once again, but this time police officer Abhishek Bachchan and his faithful ally Uday Chopra are in a hot pursuit of an international thief. The thief, Hrithik reminds you of the villain in James Bond movies — a cool and hot conman armed with sophisticated gadgets. He finds a partner in fellow thief Aishwarya Rai with whom he’s planning a big heist. But here you have a catch. Dhoom 2 is bigger than the earlier film, and is inspired by Matrix, Mission Impossible and Bond movies. Sanjay Gadhvi has gleaned all that he could from these movies to ensure the millions of bucks spent on its production do not go waste.
Dhoom 2 plunges you into action, right from the word go when Hrithik performs breathtaking skydive stunts, later you have that heart-stopping bungee drop with Hrithik and Aishwarya and the thrilling bike chase in the tunnel that ends with they gliding over a helicopter’s blades. The film elevates Bollywood action to a new level. The sheer energy of the film, stunts, the gadgets and the locations are awesome. Like most Bollywood movies, you are supposed to switch off your mind while watching the brush. The screenplay is embarrassingly amateurish. Honestly, it’s just a string of fabulous action pieces, with doses of romance, comedy and few raunchy songs. All the embellishments are in place, but don’t look for story. Hiring big stars, making them look fab, shooting at exotic locations, and designing breathtaking stunts and action scenes, but the most basic, the most fundamental, the most vital element – the script – is nowhere.
All said and done it does not stop you from being dazzled by the film. The joust action sequences and racy chases will leave everyone panting. This is a Hrithik film, he simply takes over the film, effortlessly overshadowing everyone. Of the film’s cast, Uday Chopra is the lovable sidekick, but his jokes become repetitive. Bipasha Basu oozes appeal. Hrithik is veering into a danger territory of being labelled as a super-hero. And, more dangerously, audience may not like him as an ordinary hero next time. He is one of those rare actors who is not only abundantly talented, but also blessed with a mesmerising presence. His stunt scenes — skydiving, sand-surfing, scuba-diving, roller-blading, bungee-jumping — are extraordinary.
Forget the story, and let us not cavil where the screenplay goes. Let us even forget Abhishiek Bachchan’s acting. Let us not say clichéd thing that Ash needs acting lessons. It’s simply a roller-coaster ride with Hritik, which will leave you spellbound. Watch Dhoom 2 for its explosive, adrenaline-pumping stunts. Watch Dhoom 2 for Hritik Roshan.
